Shine Brighter in 2014

On paper 2013 was a good year for the Finnish national football team. Only one lost game in European championships and World Cup qualifiers. Defending was clearly effective. Once they got the ball…too little happened.

But they did give us unforgettable last minutes of the European championships group stage. Finland needed a win against Denmark and with only a few minutes left Annica Sjölund (2nd left) headed an equalizer from a corner. Finland kept charging and soon Heidi Kivelä’s (1st right) match winning goal and Finland’s place in the quarter-finals were denied by a goalkeeper’s toe.

It is because of hair-raising minutes like those that I watch football. This year the difference between disappointment and success was only a few centimeters.
