Finland – Ice Hockey World Junior Champions 2014

What a memorable tournament! Nobody expected Finnish hockey juniors to play well this year. And then they win the final in overtime 3-2 against the championship favorite, arch-rival and host nation Sweden despite the most unfair refereeing I’ve ever seen. Incredible defensive teamwork, dangerous counter-attacks and finally the sudden death overtime ended with a spectacular solo goal that silenced the sold out big arena.

The next day a square full of Finns celebrated with the team in Helsinki. Ice hockey junior world championships are highly valued because of their entertaining games and because all adult tournaments are crippled in one way or another. Thousands of Canadians travelled to Sweden to see the games and the future stars.
