Finland’s New September Pastime: Basketball

basketball

Basketball used to be a minor detail in the Finnish sports calendar until Susijengi (wolfpack) qualified for the 2011 European Championships and played well. Two years later they took an epic second overtime win over Russia and cleared the preliminary round in front of thousands of loud Finnish fans. Next  year 10 000 traveled to see Finland’s very first World Cup appearance and were everywhere in central Bilbao.

Today Finland and Russia were again tied in the European Championships when four seconds were left. That’s enough for both teams to score. Petteri Koponen’s shot went in and Russia’s last second reply didn’t.
