President Koivisto has Died
End of Cold War president Mauno Koivisto transformed Finland from a president-led to a parliament-led country and steered Finland to the European Union once the threat of Soviet Union was gone.
He was also one of the most influential Finns in international politics thanks to his good relations to both Mikhail Gorbachev and George H. W. Bush whose summit he also hosted in Helsinki 1990.
The man who opened Finland died on an extremely rare day when the presidential palace was open for public. On Finland’s 100th anniversary year on the birthday of Finnish independence pioneer J.V Snellman.
