On the streets of Helsinki I’ve accidentally seen every Finnish president elected since the 1980s and several prime ministers. I think that tells more about Finland than about me.
Finland’s last cold war president (1982-1994) both reduced the president’s powers that were misused by his predecessor and steered Finland towards European Union membership after the collapse of the Soviet Union emphasising membership’s security implications to a small country.
During the half an hour that I was able to stay, they were having a break in events.
